In Waynesville and surrounding communities such as Maggie Valley and Lake Junaluska, finding comfortable, dependable transportation to and from the Asheville Regional Airport is a real challenge. In fact, the seed for the concept of WNC Shuttle was planted when my neighbor told me one day that for years she and her husband had been using their handyman to drive them to the Asheville Airport because they couldn’t find any alternatives.
Once I got over the tinge of disappointment that they hadn’t asked me to help – because I gladly would have – I was surprised that a town like Waynesville, with so many seasonal visitors and tourists, didn’t have any private car companies.
With the idea of starting a Waynesville private car service already percolating in my mind, for more than 2 years I kept an open ear wherever I went for transportation-related conversations. And I overheard many.
Most often, it was how to get to the Asheville airport, but sometimes it was locals wishing they could go out for an evening with the peace of mind of knowing that a professional designated driver would be at the wheel.
Other times, it was tourists asking about transportation to the Biltmore Estate or how to get to Harrah’s Cherokee Casino to take in a concert.
I don’t know how all of the situations turned out, but I know of folks who hired handymen, home-watch services, and even BnB property owners for rides.
Not surprisingly, things didn’t always go smoothly. There were complaints of dirty vehicles, late pick-ups, and limited availability. (“We weren’t going to ask them to pick us up from the casino at 1am!”)
The problem is that the handyman, the house-sitter, the vacation rental owner – they’re not invested in providing an exceptional transportation experience. To them, rides are a side gig.
